Happy Halloween! It’s the perfect time to sit down with something scary, like the massive update I just published for Bloodsport Duel SiMulator.

Ahh, what else to say… Recently I’ve been hanging out around the small web sphere and reading a lot of blog posts on personal sites, which has made me want to start talking more about incidental stuff here and not just massive 3-6K-long writeups when I have a big statement to make. But at the same time, in the context of this game release, I want to let the game to do most of the talking.

My sexuality has affected how I interact with many queer indie works in recent memory, but expression of this won't really be in the game until the next (and final) content update.

I feel like I have a tendency to be an obsessive person. When it comes to hobbies, I go all-in or not at all– gamedev is no exception to this. When working on this update I tried really hard to keep it from dominating my free time, but when I settled on the Halloween release date I ended up pulling a few late nights and skipping a few gym sessions to get it done. So it goes.

It does feel nice to know that this update has an existing, receptive audience, so I don’t feel like I’m tearing off a part of myself and throwing it into an uncaring void like I did when I published the initial release.1 Writing in particular is something that I can really get in my head about, and I’m thankful to my beta readers who could reassure me that I really was cooking when I was deep in the mines.

It can be a bit daunting to think about how this game has become my single longest writing project to date, and that the script is (roughly) only half-complete. But the pieces are all starting to come together and the payoff is going to be (and already has been) tremendous.

For now I’m just glad that this chunk of it is done, a weight is off my chest, and I’m free to go play other games that I’ve been meaning to get to for a while now. I’m going to enjoy the rest of my Halloween and aggressively ignore metrics numbers for a few days.
