• Bash for Beginners I initially wrote this for a class I taught, redistributing this here because it should be useful to the typical Linux newbie.
• Windows Subsystem for Linux makes using the following tools a lot simpler if you haven’t convinced yourself to make the jump yet.

Most of the following are things that I use on a regular basis.

• git, because once you start using version management you’ll never go back.
  • Beginner’s guide to git
  • How to set up multiple accounts
  • Avoid using global credentials!
• chezmoi easily syncs dotfiles and user scripts across multiple machines.
• pandocs converts between different text markup formats.
• ImageMagick runs image editing operations in bulk.
  • I am begging renpy devs to stop manually editing individual images in their projects.
  • Used to generate the thumbnails in my art gallery, handled automatically by the jekyll backend.

Graphical

• Syncthing continuously syncs files between devices– entirely p2p, no cloud involved.
• Obsidian organizes sprawling notes for writing projects.
• Zim is a no-frills local wiki editor.

Web

• Bitwarden password manager makes maintaining good password practices a breeze.
• Block GenAI image results with uBlacklist and this blocklist.
• Disable CSS animations with Tampermonkey and this script. Particularly useful on low-end machines.
• ReVanced can make Android Youtube bearable by removing ads, sponsors, and shorts.

Visual

• The Ransom Center’s movie poster collection consists of an estimated 10,000 posters and spans the entire history of film from the silent era to the present day. Searchable!
• CARI, or Consumer Aesthetics Research Institute, is an online community dedicated to developing a visual lexicon of consumer ephemera from the 1970s until now.
• Exactitudes is a fashion reference with examples going back 20 years that emphasizes how individuals style themselves to signal that they are a part of a group.

Aural

• Zophar’s Music Domain has rips of over 19,000 videogame soundtracks.
• Ishkur’s Guide to Electronic Music an interactive online guide to the many genres of electronic music out there. A mainstay of some genre subcircles since 1999.

• The Umalator, a race simlulator with detailed stat breakdowns.
• uma.moe has many useful resources, including parent search, support card tierlist (ranks cards purely as stat sticks), and upcoming release timeline.
• Chronogenesis is another parent database.
• Carat calculator helps plan how to spend your income on upcoming banners.
• Uma Musume Rating Calculator can predict what a Uma’s rating will be, based on their stats and skills. Particularly useful for Open Champion’s Meeting.
• Gametora has virtually all the other resources you could ask for, including databases for characters, supports, and skills, Uma parent compatibility calculator, etc.
